Why does a good CCTV system matter?
Well-installed cameras deter intruders, let you check what happened after a theft or incident and give you peace of mind when you're away: you can see your shop, warehouse or second home from your phone at any time. In an area like the Costa Brava, with many homes closed for months and seasonal businesses, it is one of the most useful security investments.
But a badly configured camera can be a problem rather than a solution: images you can't see at night, recordings deleted too soon or devices reachable from the internet with the factory password. In Spain you must also comply with data protection rules: display a CCTV warning sign, record no more of the public street than strictly necessary and keep footage for a maximum of one month unless it is needed for an incident.

In October 2016, a virus called Mirai took control of hundreds of thousands of internet-connected security cameras and recorders that still used their factory username and password. It used them to launch an attack that knocked websites such as Twitter, Netflix and Spotify offline for hours. The owners of those cameras never even noticed. Changing passwords and updating devices is as important as positioning them well.
